    One by One

    A bright green apple lands
    beneath the bowl
and wonders if it will be noticed.

Two scarlet petals of a lily tulip
    cling the naked tulip tips
as they rest their stalks on the sides of the vase.

Taste the silence in that second
sip of fresh tea from the Royal Copenhagen
or in the salty water from that second dive into the sea.

See the silent splash of fog
at dusk, that smothers bedtime ambiguity
and wraps itself around the frosty sheaves of grass.

    Now, smell the first snow-flakes
    as they begin their task
and lay their crystals on the ageing hills,

    one by one.
